What is Sociology?
Sociology's Origin, History and Background:
Systematic study of Sociology started with Greeks, they considered men as a social animal and the need of society. The modern sociology was coined by August Comte. He is considered as the founder of modern sociology and named it as “Social Physics”.
Background:
The term has been derived from two words, in Latin “Socious” mean companionship and the Greek “logos” mean study. Sociology is a social science that focuses on society, human social behaviour, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life.
- According to August Comte, Sociology is the scientific study of society.
- Max Weber argued, Sociology is the study of social action.
- Sociology is the study of social facts through social institutions. (Emile Durkhiem).
- Park & Burgess about sociology: Sociology is the study of collective behaviour.
- Sociology is the scientific of study of social aspects of human life. (Mack Young)
- Sociology is the study of humans living together. (Tonnies)
- Simmel emphasised , Sociology is the study of social groups on the basis of social interaction.
Conclusion:
On the basis of above definitions, we can conclude that sociology is the science of society, human behaviour, human interaction and relationships.
